San  Rafael's  Canal  Community

The Canal Neighborhood is the heart of Marin's Latino community and the great majority of residents in this culturally rich area are immigrants from Latin America countries, primarily Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador.  The Canal is also home to Vietnamese immigrants, caucasians and African-Americans. Residents earn a lower family income, experience higher health disparities, have lower life expectancies and perform worse in school than the County average. The Canal is flanked by a canal, the Bay and route 101. Fortunately, the Canal area has not experienced major flooding since a new pump system was put in after the 1982 floods. However, sea level rise projections indicate a high level of risk for inundation in much of the neighborhood. View projections through the sea level rise viewers here. The Federal Emergency Management Administration has also identified flood risk in the Canal neighborhood. You can type your address into the map program here.
